In a rousing first novel, already an award-winner in England, Harry is just a baby when his magical parents are done in by Voldemort, a wizard so dastardly other wizards are scared to mention his name. Children will enjoy Odd’s quiet heroism and the simple adventure adults will love the squabbling gods and the strong women (and the Frost Giant’s response to feisty Freya!). Martin’s The Ice Dragon (2006), this succeeds both as a delightful children’s book and an adult collectible. ![]() Odd ultimately outwits the giant in a way that upholds and yet totally subverts the trope, at the end returning home still humble but successful and clearly destined for more adventures. When an endless winter descends, he leaves his stepfather’s home and is recruited by talking animals who are actually Thor, Odin and Loki, exiled to earth by a Frost Giant. Unlucky Odd lost his father during a Viking raid (but not to heroics) and then crushed his leg trying to be a man. Originally written for World Book Day, this sweet, wistful, slyly funny novella also offers a crash course in ancient Norse mythology. Gaiman does it again, this time featuring a lame young boy, talking animals and intrigue in Asgard. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments Red scare by liam francis walsh![]() On top of all that, Peggy has a hard time at school, and gets taunted by her classmates. In the process, he rearranges Earth’s geography such that the U.S., Canada, and Europe all share a common border. Vassanji takes his readers to a future divided between the affluent First World, here dubbed the North Atlantic Alliance, and an amalgam of poor and underdeveloped countries. ![]() What makes Nostalgia much more than a literary novelist’s crack at the crowded market of work set in a dystopian future awash with impossibly beautiful and ethnically indeterminate youth is a series of philosophical and political questions that will not sound out of place in the present moment, as the world witnesses the ongoing global refugee crisis or that other tragedy, the U.S. ![]() On the surface, this slim but meaty volume may read like a departure into genre territrory – Vassanji does speculative fiction! – but the focus on characters searching for their true selves against the backdrop of a world divided between here and there is a holdover from earlier books. Vassanji turns to the future in his new novel, somewhat ironically titled Nostalgia. If it were possible to give half stars I would give the story 3.5 stars. I would also point out that despite the enthusiasm of what I assume are fans, that Taylor hasn't yet reached the skill level of the other authors I have mentioned. ![]() It's also science fiction rather than romance. It's complete in itself although it is part of a series. People who enjoy Connie Willis' time travel books or Kage Bakers novels of the Company might enjoy at least this first book. There's lots of action and adventure as she has to cope not just with being sent back to dangerous time periods, but also with problems from the future. Any way, the heroine, a woman who has completed her doctorate in history, is recruited by an old teacher who once at a pivotal moment in her life provided guidance, into a time travel project. ![]() The setting is the UK at some near future point in time. I really hate that term applied to books, unless someone if referring to the condition of the pages rather than the content. Probably I wouldn't have even thought about either factor except someone had rated it as one star because it wasn't CLEAN enough. It also contains some (brief) sex and adult language. In case this bothers a reader: this is a first person point of view story.
